Alberta On A Roll!

Grande Prairie’s Kurt Balderston and squad continued their hot play at the Canadian Mixed curling championship in Sudbury. In a prairie battle, Alberta stopped 2009 Canadian Mixed champ Sean Grassie 7-6 in a game with many stones in play each end. Balderston sits alone in first place with a record of 7-1.  They face Nunavut in tonight’s action followed by games against BC and Ontario on Wednesday. Grassie’s record is now at 5-3.

Jason Ackerman of the Tartan CC in Regina missed a chance to stay even with Alberta when Martin Ferland’s Quebec team handed them a 9-3 drubbing. Ackerman drops to a tie for second place with New Brunswick at 6-2. NB had the afternoon off. Ferland improved to 6-3 with Ontario’s Mark Homan who dumped Yukon (0-8).

BC’s Doug Marshall’s win streak was stopped at five following a 6-3 loss to previously winless Gary Alcock of Newfoundland & Labrador. Marshall drops to 5-3 while Alcock is now in the win column at 1-6.

Northern Ontario kept their playoff hopes alive taking two in the 8th to tie, then stealing a single in both the 9th and 10th ends edging Nova Scotia’s Chris Sutherland 8-6. Mike Assad’s record is now 5-3 while the NS skip struggles at 1-6.

Besides NB, other teams with the afternoon byes were NWT (3-4), Nunavut (0-7) and PEI (4-4).
