Grey Cup curling match-up goes to Manitoba

In the battle of Grey Cup competing provinces, Manitoba claimed early bragging rights with a 6-4 win over British Columbia in the first draw of The Dominion Curling Club Championship at the Richmond Curling Club. Manitoba skip Barry Mandryk of the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club in Winnipeg, took 2 in the first end with hammer, then traded points with BC until stealing 1 in the 6th end to take a 5-3 lead. Mandryk’s son Jason plays third on the team. BC skip Dwight Hodder from Ashcroft Curling Club says a few team mistakes on hits prevented the host team from mounting the comeback. “We gave them a lot more breaks than they needed…a few little slips ups and we weren’t able to get there.” In other first draw games in the men’s division, Ontario skip Greg Balsdon of Richmond Hill made a raise double takeout on his final shot to score 2 and beat Nunavut 5-3. Alberta Beat Yukon 6-2, New Brunswick beat Northern Ontario 9-4, Saskatchewan scored 4 in the 6th end to beat Quebec 8-4, and Newfoundland and Labrador beat Nova Scotia 6-3. The Dominion Curling Club Championship is a national competition for club curling teams. Round Robin play continues until Friday, with the finals set for Saturday afternoon.
