Battle of the Giants

Today’s third of four draws bore witness to some clashes of the titans. On the women’s side of the ledger Team Alberta’ Cathy King sparred with another former Canadian champion in Team NS (Nancy Delahunt w/Colleen Jones throwing last stones). King jumped out to a 4-1 lead but, by the 5^th end break, Team Delahunt got to within one point of the Albertans. But that was as close as they would get with the final score posted at 9-4 for the blue & gold. The win keeps Alberta undefeated (5-0). The Bluenose crew fall to 3-2. In the battle of Upper v. Lower Canada (aka Ontario v. Quebec), the women from the Club de Curling Trois-Rivieres got the best of the score (10-5). The win puts QC at 2-3 and ON at 3-2. The third women’s match up went right down to the wire and a little past as the team from the Re/Max Centre in St. John’s, NL needed a last stone draw to the button by skip Cathy Cunningham to edge the reigning women’s champions from Saint John, NB by a score of 7-6. The victory sees the curlers from the Rock at 4-1 and the Saint John foursome struggling at 1-4. In a clash of current and former Canadian Senior Men’s Champions, Team Hritzuk (world champions in 2009) had little trouble with the defending champion (Kelly Robertson) by scoring early and often. At the Velcro snap the score read 11-2 for the prairie gang. The win stopped some major bleeding on the part of Team SK which had dropped its previous three games. The Green Machine is now 2-3 while the Buffaloes are at 3-2. Another men’s game pitted Team QC (Pierre Charette) against the host team from Prince George (Dennis Grabber). This was one of those back-and-forth matches where shots missed seemed to show up on the scoreboard. The “killer end” clearly was the ninth when Brian Windsor, the deliverer of the last stones for Team BC removed a Quebec stone in the four foot and all he could see was a sliver of it but made it he did leaving BC counting three. In the last end, despite getting two corner guards and a miss from BC, Team QC just couldn’t conjure up enough points to even the game and take it to an extra end. The loss puts the team from la belle province at 2-3 and moves Team BC to 4-1. In the last of the three men’s games, Team NO (Rob Gordon) put in a solid effort versus the lads from the Charlottetown C. C. (Charlie Wilkinson) posting a comfortable 6-2 victory.
