Canada Remains Undefeated at World Championship

Team Canada continues to sit in first place at the World Men’s Curling Championship today, defeating Norway 8-3 in eight ends to remain undefeated after six draws. Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud, third Torger Nergard, second Christoffer Svae, and lead Havard Vad Petersson have managed only one win so far in the tournament and found themselves in tough against a Canadian team that continues to roll. Monday morning’s match-up saw Canada leading 4-2 at the break, then taking control, scoring deuces with hammer and allowing Norway only singles until handshakes after eight. “Norway came out strong,” reports National Team Coach Rick Lang from Basel, “but Glenn Howard made a great freeze in the third end that resulted in a two for Canada.” Howard kept applying the pressure and Ulsrud wasn’t able to respond, says Lang, resulting in some uncharacteristic misses from the Norwegian skip, who seemed to struggle with the ice conditions. Canadian lead Craig Savill posted a perfect game – 100 percent accuracy according to the game statistics. Team Canada leads all teams in percentages (88%) after four games. “It’s pretty cool (to beat the European Champions),” said Howard after the game. “I know Thomas, we’ve played them many times. They’re one of the best teams in the world and we got Thomas on an off day. He himself struggled and that’s uncharacteristic of him.” Lang says Team Canada – Howard, Wayne Middaugh, Brent Laing and Savill – is obviously happy with the winning momentum they’ve established throughout the first six draws. “The best part of it all is that my guys made everything,” agrees Howard. “We’re going in the right direction.” Canada plays the Czech Republic in the Monday evening draw.
