It’s Been a Rockin’ Summer for the Tim Hortons Brier

Rock’n August is an annual summer tradition in St. Albert and for its 16th anniversary the Brier volunteers pitched the event tent to promote the 2013 Tim Hortons Brier – the Canadian Men’s Curling Championship – coming to Edmonton’s Rexall Place March 2-10. The fundraiser is a mecca for classic car enthusiasts featuring close to 600 vintage vehicles from across western Canada and the northern United States. The international car show attracts crowds in excess of 50,000 for a four-day summer celebration that comes with its own music festival.  This year’s headliners included Harlequin, Doug and the Slugs and The Campus Thieves. The volunteers were on the scene August 11 awarding prizes to contestants in the bean bag toss contest and distributing promotional materials for the prestigious championship that returns to Edmonton for a sixth time. On the same day, members of the Tim Hortons Brier organizing team were on hand for the opening of the Alberta Rocks Curling Camp that ran August 11-14 at the Leduc Recreation Centre.  Host Committee Chair Mark Johnson and Marketing Administrator Lindsay Makichuk were part of the instruction team for the group of young curlers between 12 and 17 years of age. Charley Thomas, J.D. Lind and Matt Ng, three members of the runner-up team from the 2012 Alberta provincial playdowns were there to share their knowledge and experience with the kids.  Norm Gould, coach of the Jeff Stoughton team was another instructor along with guest appearances by Marc Kennedy, second for Kevin Martin and Nolan Thiessen who throws lead stones for Kevin Koe.
