Penticton Welcomes Curling’s Team Canada

Shouts of “hurry hard” rang loudly throughout the Cherry Lane Shopping Centre September 26 as a group of students from Wiltse Elementary School played Rocks and Rings with Canada’s reigning women’s curling champions. Heather Nedohin and her Team Canada mates – Beth Iskiw, Jessica Mair and Laine Peters – were in Penticton for a one-day visit and spent part of the afternoon meeting with the young fans.  After a briefing from Nedohin on the “ins and outs” of the game, the youngsters had the chance to throw some rocks in the Centre Court of the mall. The curlers also held an autograph session for an enthusiastic group of Cherry Lane patrons. School principal Cathy Bowles arranged the trip for three classes including 53 grade five students accompanied by teachers Ms. Snowsell and Ms. McConnell and 20 youngsters from Ms. Trip’s grade one class. “We had a lot of fun.  The children were excited about the event,” reports Bowles.  “The Grade 1’s were tired when they got back and only wanted to be read to.” The visit to Penticton included a brief tour of the community for the four curlers who were blown away by the legendary beauty of the landscape.  They made it clear they were excited to return January 10-13 for the 2013 World Financial Group Continental Cup of Curling. “You Gotta Be There” when Team North America takes on Team World in the high stakes challenge match featuring the best curlers in the game.  Great seats in the South Okanagan Events Centre are available right now by clicking here.
