Atlantic Canada’s “Golden Boy” Heading to Capital One Canada Cup of Curling

In a star-studded field that will take to the ice in Moose Jaw’s Mosaic Place November 28-December 2 for the 2012 Capital One Canada Cup of Curling, only two skips share the Olympic gold medal experience.

Kevin Martin is the most recent with an emotional victory at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.  But the Albertan was preceded by Brad Gushue, the pride of Newfoundland/Labrador, who stood atop the podium at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy.

It not only marked Canada’s first Olympic gold medal performance in men’s curling, it was the first-ever gold in any sport for athletes hailing from an Atlantic province.

A six-time provincial representative at the Canadian Junior Men’s Curling Championship, Gushue took the national and world titles in 2001.  Following his junior career he continued to excel in the sport.  Nine appearances at the Canadian Men’s Curling Championships wearing Newfoundland/Labrador colours have netted a pair of medals…  silver at the 2007 Tim Hortons Brier in Hamilton and a bronze four years later in London.

Holding the seventh spot in the Canadian Team Ranking System at the conclusion of the 2011-2012 season, Gushue earned the last of the seven men’s berths in the Capital One Canada Cup.  Along with teammates Adam Casey, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker, he’ll be shooting for the title in Moose Jaw along with direct access to the 2013 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings – the Canadian Curling Trials – and the opportunity to return to the Olympic Games in 2014.
