Four teams remain undefeated after Draw 6

Alberta’s Kristie Moore came out firing on Monday afternoon, stealing the first end and keeping the pressure on undefeated Jill Shumay of Saskatchewan in Draw 6 action, but in the end it wasn’t enough. Moore and her team of Blaine de Jager, Michelle Dykstra and Amber Cheveldave brought the intensity that comes with desperately wanting that first win. After trading singles in the first two ends, Moore had the game under control, taking a 5-2 lead going into the break. But the momentum shifted in the sixth, as Saskatchewan kicked into gear, stealing deuces in the seventh and eighth ends, then forcing Alberta to take a single in the ninth. “We just tried to get loose,” said Shumay about the change in her team in the second half of the game. “We said let’s just go out there and relax and play like we can play.” “We pushed ourselves in the first half,” she said. “We did that to ourselves, just not playing the way we normally do the first four ends especially. I was not making my draws and that was kind of the difference.” In the tenth, tied 6-6, Shumay was faced with a draw to the four foot for the win, and she made no mistake. “Yeah, I was. I’m not going to lie,” Shumay said. “I was nervous. It’s a big shot.” In the other tight game of the afternoon, Rachel Homan gave the crowd of 2,607 Ontario fans something to cheer about with an exciting extra-end 9-8 victory over B.C.’s Kelly Scott. The game came down to two perfect shots: a draw to the four-foot by Scott, removed with precision by Homan. The win left Ontario tied with Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Team Canada at the top of the standings with identical 4-0 records. Two games were decided early. Manitoba faced off against struggling Nova Scotia’s Mary-Anne Arsenault, who is still looking for her first win. Arsenault and her team of Kim Kelly, Colleen Jones and Jen Baxter, played a patient game, keeping rocks in play and forcing Jennifer Jones to make the big shots. But it wasn’t enough. Leading 4-3 after the break, Jones cracked it open with scores of three, four and three to earn the 11-4 victory in nine ends. In the other game of the afternoon, Heather Nedohin’s Team Canada kept its momentum going, taking three points against Allison Ross and her Quebec team in the first end, then stealing two in the second and rolling to a 12-2 victory in seven ends. The Scotties continues Monday evening, with Draw 7 at 7:30 p.m., and on Tuesday with draws at 2 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. (all times EST).
