Team Canada women lose to Scotland at World Juniors

Team Canada’s Corryn Brown has fallen to 0-2 at the 2013 World Junior Curling Championship in Sochi, Russia. Brown’s team from Kamloops, B.C. — third Erin Pincott, Samantha Fisher, Sydney Fraser (with alternate Cathlia Ward and coach Ken Brown) — lost a close 3-2 contest to 2012 champion Hannah Fleming of Scotland on Friday. In a highly defensive game, Canada held Scotland to a single in the third, but was forced to take one in the fifth, for a 1-1 tie heading to the break. Scotland took another single in the sixth, but Brown blanked, holding on to hammer until the eighth end, when the guards went up and the come-around game started. Some missed take-outs by Canada meant Brown had to make a quiet double to score one. After a blanked ninth, Fleming attempted a double-takeout for the win with her final rock but missed slightly, leaving rocks for each team just touching the eight-foot. The measurement went to Scotland, which remains undefeated in the round robin. “The girls played shot for shot tonight and met two goals,” said Team Canada Team Leader Andrea Ronneback who is with the team in Sochi. “They practiced a specific skill and implemented it today and their second goal was to force their opposition to harder shots and they did just that.” “It was definitely a better game than our game yesterday,” said Brown. “So we’ll take that and we’ll learn a lot from that game. Can’t ask for more than coming to down a measure. The girls played really well and it was definitely better than last game.” Team Canada’s junior women will be looking for their first win, against Russia’s Alina Kovaleva in Draw 4 on Saturday (5 a.m. EST). Matt Dunstone’s Winnipeg men’s team — third Colton Lott, second Daniel Grant, lead Brendan MacCuish, alternate Josh Barry and coach Scott Grant – had the day off after winning both its games on the first day of competition. Team Canada returns to action on Saturday against Scotland’s Kyle Smith (midnight EST) and the Czech Republic’s Marek Cernovsky (10 a.m. EST).
