Dunstone wins another for 3-1 record at World Juniors

Matt Dunstone got off to a rough start on Saturday, losing 7-6 to Kyle Smith of Scotland in an extra end, but he came back strong to win 5-3 against Czech Republic’s Marek Cernovsky to stay in touch with the leaders at the 2013 World Junior Curling Championships.

Dunstone and his Winnipeg men’s team — third Colton Lott, second Daniel Grant, lead Brendan MacCuish, alternate Josh Barry and coach Scott Grant – opened the scoring with three points in the second end, and they were in control against Scotland for most of the game. Smith forced the extra end with a deuce in ten and stole a point for the win. Against the Czechs, Dunstone again took control, scoring a deuce with hammer, and holding Cernovsky to singles. Leading 5-2 after eight, the Canadians kept things clean and hit out the game for 5-3 win. “Great team effort,” said Dunstone, who shot 96 per cent in the game. “The guys made it easy. They made my shots easier, so that’s probably why the percentage is so high. We’re getting better each and every game, and that’s a good thing for us.” In the women’s competition, Corryn Brown’s team from Kamloops, B.C. — third Erin Pincott, Samantha Fisher, Sydney Fraser (with alternate Cathlia Ward and coach Ken Brown) — continued to struggle, losing 9-3 to Russia’s Alina Kovaleva. “That was a tough one to take for sure,” said Brown, still looking for her first win. “But hopefully we get the next couple going and gain some momentum.” “It was just a couple of missed shots here and there, that’s kind of where the game turned around,” she said. “We’re just not coming out of the right end of the shots.” Both men’s and women’s teams are in action only once on Sunday. The women face undefeated Japan’s Sayaka Yoshimura (midnight EST), while Team Canada men will meet Sweden’s Patric Mabergs (5 a.m. EST).
