New Brunswick & Nova Scotia Roar Out of the Gate at Seniors
There are two World Senior Women’s champions in the field at this year’s Canadian Seniors Curling Championships in Summerside, PEI and both teams roared out to solid starts in the opening games of the round robin.NB’s Heidi Hanlon, the reigning world senior’s champions, stopped BC’s Karen Lepine 10-7. Lepine was forced out of action before the first stones after falling in practice, fracturing her left wrist. It has yet to be determined if the right-handed Lepine will be able to play.
Colleen Pinkney, the Canadian senior women’s champ in 2009 (last time this event was held in Summerside) and world senior champion in 2010, scored a 10-7 victory over Northern Ontario’s Vicky Barrett.
The host club’s provincial champion skip Nola Murphy did not fare so well in her opening round match against a strong Alberta foursome led by Debbie Santos. The PEI squad scored a 4 ender late in the game to make the score close at 11-7 for Alberta.
In other first round games, NL’s Laura Phillips scored a deuce in the 10th end to edge the NWT’s Ann McKellar-Gillis 10-9. The Yellowknife skip had survived the pre-qualifying round to advance to the main draw.
Quebec’s Catherine Derick upset perennial powerhouse Saskatchewan with a solid 11-4 trashing of Yorkton’s Cathy Inglis.
In the final game of Draw 1, four-time Tournament of Hearts competitor, Lois Fowler of Manitoba, survived a 9-8 extra end win over Ontario’s Judy Oryniak.
