Volunteers rally for the roar

The building that has been charged with electricity for the past two years, every time the Winnipeg Jets skate on the ice, had a similar atmosphere Sunday, April 28 when it was taken over by local curling enthusiasts.
The first rally for the 2013 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings, presented by Monsanto, attracted a crowd of 760 excited volunteers to the MTS Centre, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Canadian Curling Trials, Dec. 1-8.
“Everyone’s really pumped for the Roar of the Rings,” said Host Committee Chair Mitch Tarapasky. “Even though we’re still seven months away from the start date, you can see that all the volunteers are aware of the magnitude of the event.”
The rally, running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., provided the volunteers with the first opportunity to meet with event directors, have accreditation photos taken and be sized for official uniforms.
It was also a chance to meet with a number of the competitors that will be shooting for Olympic glory in December. Members of the Jennifer Jones, Jeff Stoughton, Chelsea Carey and Mike McEwen teams were on hand to sign autographs and express their appreciation to the hundreds of volunteers that have signed on for the event.
“The rally was an overwhelming success,” said Tarapasky. “You could just feel the energy in the air… we’ve got a great group of volunteers and they’re definitely ready to roar!”
