The spotlight will obviously be on the athletes when the top competitive curlers in Canada take over the home of the Winnipeg Jets for the 2013 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings, presented by Monsanto.
But, don’t underestimate the role of the fans when the ice is transformed to a pebbled surface and the game’s “sweet 16” – encompassing eight of our country’s elite men’s and women’s teams – compete Dec. 1-8 at the MTS Centre in the Canadian Curling Trials, vying for the right to proudly wear the maple leaf at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
Curling fans, widely recognized as the most knowledgeable and passionate supporters of their sport, are always a major part of the story at Season of Champions events. While the athletes shine on the ice, the flamboyant wardrobes and face-paints in the stands have become standard fare during championship play.
The “Sociables”, a group of fans hailing from Calgary and Edmonton, has taken the fan experience to a new level in recent years with elaborate costumes and signs at the Tim Hortons Brier. It’s yet to be determined if they’ll be bringing their entertaining act to the MTS Centre in December, but you can be sure there will plenty of colour in the crowd.
The primary reason live championship curling attracts such a loyal legion of fans is its fan-friendly environment, surpassing that of any other major sporting event. When it comes to curling, the fans are much more than just spectators – they are an integral part of the overall experience.

The fun all kicks off with Fanfest on Nov. 30, the day before the action gets underway on the ice. The interactive event is being staged to give fans and families alike the chance for an inside look at the sport.
Throughout the week, the Patch becomes the official headquarters for all the off-ice festivities. Located in the Winnipeg Convention Centre – with an indoor pedway connection to the MTS Centre – the Patch will be party central during the Roar of the Rings.
Along with a tasty selection of food and beverages, the Patch offers a lineup of live entertainment that will keep the party rocking late into the night. For those who feel the competitive urge, the Cool Shots championship will be on the boards every day with the chance to win cash prizes in the small-scale version of the game played on shuffleboard-style tables.
A truly unique characteristic of championship curling is the opportunity for fans to interact with the athletes. Even though they’re competing in one of the most important challenges of their competitive careers, the curlers will be making time to meet with the fans at Team Autograph sessions and Up Close and Personal interviews.
