Scotties volunteers off to roaring start

The first formal gathering of volunteers for the 2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts – the Canadian women’s curling championship – scheduled Feb. 1-9 at Montreal’s Maurice-Richard Arena, demonstrated the organizing team’s ability to adapt quickly to change.
A last-minute shift in venues for the first volunteer rally – originally planned to take place at the Pearson Electrotechnology Centre, it was moved to the Maurice-Richard Arena – saw volunteers at work early Saturday, Sept. 28, setting up stations for uniform sizing and accreditation photos.
“I am pleased to say that Saturday’s rally was the first step towards making the Scotties 2014 tournament a roaring success,” said Catherine Hughes, Vice-Chair of Volunteers and Special Events. “The volunteers arrived with smiles as bright as the sunshine, and their enthusiasm and excitement set the mood for the day. I am very proud of the team of Directors and their volunteers, and know we are on the right track to having a great Scotties in Montreal.”
Although the rally was conducted in relatively tight confines, a solid organizational effort ensured its success. Volunteers had the opportunity to meet with their Directors, get a preview of the venue in which they’ll be working next February and win door prizes provided by Kruger, title sponsor for the Scotties.
The next rally will be held in January when volunteers will pick up their official uniforms and event accreditation.
