Ontario sends second team to the Scotties

Rachel Homan locked down the first spot in the 2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts with a gold-medal victory at last season’s Canadian women’s curling championship, earning the right to wear the Team Canada uniform, Feb. 1-9 in Montreal’s Maurice-Richard Arena. That left the door open for a new Ontario representative at this year’s Scotties. The 10-team field for the provincial playdowns included Sherry Middaugh, finalist in the 2013 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials, as well as the Tracy Horgan and Cathy Auld teams that competed in the 2013 Capital One Road to the Roar Pre-Trials event. But when play finished up in the provincial championship, Jan. 6-12 in Sault Ste. Marie, the anticipated favourites were out of the running. The Allison Flaxey team from Listowel defeated Julie Hastings of Thornhill in the championship final and moves on to compete for the national title in Montreal. It marks the first provincial championship for Flaxey, a former Canadian mixed champion and bronze-medallist at the 2009 world mixed doubles championship, who will be joined by Katie Cottrill, Lynn Kreviazuk and Morgan Court in Montreal. Kreviazuk was a member of Homan’s 2010 world junior silver medal team. The Ontario skip’s husband, Caleb Flaxey, is the alternate for the Brad Jacobs team that will represent Canada in Sochi. “You Gotta Be There” to see Canada’s best at the 2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
