Quebec through to the final

Defending champion Benoit Lessard will lead his Quebec team into the finals of the 2014 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship after defeating Ontario’s Mike Munro in the Page 1-2 playoff on Saturday afternoon at the Club de curling Boucherville. Lessard and his team of Carl Marquis, Sébastien Boisvert, Johanne Daly and coach Germain Tremblay scored a single in the first end and stole the next two ends to lead 5-0 at the fourth-end break. Leading 6-2 in the eighth, Quebec hit out for the win. Ontario – Munro, Mark Ideson, Katie Palalunga, Christine Lavallee, Tony Reynen and coach Chris Bowden from the Ilderton Curling Club – will now take on Manitoba’s Dennis Thiessen in the semifinal on Sunday morning, with the winner moving on to the final against Quebec.

Thiessen and his team of Mark Wherrett, Melissa Lecuyer, Jamie Anseeuw and coach Tom Wherrett won the Page 3-4 playoff in a nailbiter against Alberta’s Jack Smart. After stealing three points in the seventh to tie the score at 7-7, Smart’s final draw slid through the rings, leaving Thiessen lying one for the 8-7 win. The semifinal between Ontario and Manitoba begins at 10 a.m. Sunday, with the winner moving on to play Quebec in the championship final Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Live streaming of the event is available at https://www.ustream.tv/channel/wcblog2
