Queen’s & Regina Victorious in Edmonton!

Jon Beuk, skip of the Queen’s University Golden Gaels men’s curling team and University of Regina Cougars women’s skip Brooklyn Lemon captured their respective championships today at the 2010 CIS/CCA University Curling Championships at the Saville Sports Centre in Edmonton.

Queen's University Golden Gaels

Jon Beuk with teammates Andrew Inouye (third), Chadd Vandermade (second), Scott Chadwick (lead) and coach Dick Henderson defeated 2009 Canadian Junior Champion and World silver medalist Brett Gallant of UPEI 7-6 in the final.  Beuk was up one with the hammer in the last end and did not have to throw his last rock as Gallant failed to draw around cover.  In the semi finals, Beuk stole two points in the 9th end and then a single in the 10th to edge University of Manitoba’s Sam Good 6-5. In the other semi final, Gallant defeated Ian Juurlink of Dalhousie 8-5. The men’s section featured 14 teams from across Canada split into two pools of 7 with the top two in each pool advancing to the playoff round.

Wilfred Laurier Women's Curling Team

Lemon fashinoned her victory in spectacular fashion drawing the button in the extra end to edge Saint Mary’s University’s Marie Christianson 6-5. Lemon and third Chelsey Peterson, second Ashley Green, lead Nicole Lang, alternate Sarah Watamanuk and coach Jackie Downer dodged a  bullet in the 10th when Christianson narrowly missed a takeout that would have scored two for the victory. In the women’s semi final, Lemon upset defending champ Wilfrid Laurier and skip Danielle Inglis 11-5 while Christianson stopped Waterloo’s Kathering Pringle 8-5. The women’s section featured 12 teams split into two pools of 7 with the top two in each pool advancing to the playoff round. Both Beuk and Lemon will now represent Canada at the Winter Universiade, January 27th to February 6th, 2011 in Erzurum, Turkey.
