CCA announces sites for 2013 and 2014 Canadian Mixed
The Canadian Curling Association (CCA) today announced the sites and dates for the 2013 and 2014 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships.
The 2013 edition will be held November 15-24, 2012 at the Town of Mount Royal Curling Club in Montreal, while the 2014 renewal will be staged November 14-23, 2013 at the Rideau Curling Club in Ottawa.
“The Town of Mount Royal Curling Club is pleased to be working with the Canadian Curling Association to host the 50th Canadian Mixed Championship in 2012, a year that happens to be the 60th anniversary of the founding of our club,” said Michael McAteer, President, Town of Mount Royal Curling Club (TMRCC). “We are looking forward to a week-long celebration of the sport of curling. The TMRCC is also proud to be represented at the Tim Hortons Brier this year by the team of François Gagné, Quebec’s provincial champions.”
It will be just the third time that the province of Quebec has hosted The Mixed, since the championship began in Toronto in 1964. In 1967, it was held in Quebec City and won by Saskatchewan’s Larry McGrath. In 1990, the championship was hosted by Rimouski and won by Alberta’s Marvin Wirth.
Quebec has won but one Canadian Mixed, that by skip Jean-Michel Ménard in 2001 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan.
Founded in 1888, the 2013-2014 curling season marks the Rideau Curling Club’s 125th anniversary.
“Last summer, the Rideau Curling Club went through a pretty extensive renovation which included improvements to our equipment, ice and lounge areas,” said Layne Noble, President, Board of Directors, Rideau Curling Club. “Now, we really want to continue a history of hosting the best curlers from across Canada. We look forward to working with the CCA to create an amazing week and a half of curling as the showcase event for our 125th anniversary season.”
Ontario (excluding Northern Ontario) has hosted a leading nine Mixed championships since 1964, the last in Burlington in 2009 (2010 edition of the Mixed), when won by Nova Scotia’s Mark Dacey. Ontario has won only two Mixed titles, though, in 1986 in Kamloops, by skip Dave Van Dine and in Whitehorse for the 2006 renewal, when won by John Epping.
The 2011 Canadian Mixed, held last November in Morris, Manitoba, was captured by Prince Edward Island’s Robert Campbell, his second win in this national championship after taking the 1989 edition.
Meanwhile, the 2012 Canadian Mixed will be hosted by the Sudbury Curling Club, November 12-19, 2011.
