Lethbridge Draws on a Tradition of Success
The Season of Champions returns to Lethbridge in 2012 as the city hosts the Ford World Women’s Curling Championship. And based on the interest being generated in the community, event organizers are expecting another roaring success.
Lethbridge was the stage for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in 2007 – won by Team Canada’s Kelly Scott – and that experience has proven invaluable in preparations for the upcoming world women’s championship.
Host Committee Chair Jody Meli reports that the promotions team has been active during the summer and all their appearances are being welcomed throughout the region.
“I really think the biggest legacy of the 2007 Scotties was the strong level of awareness relating to the excitement of hosting a championship event,” says Meli. “It left us with a solid nucleus of volunteers, and we’re seeing many of them coming back to get involved once again.”
The full complement of volunteers has already been reached but the Host Committee is still accepting applications for the waiting list. If you wish to get involved please email or call Lindsey Kruschel at the Event Office (firstname.lastname@example.org or 403-942-2875). Volunteers will be contacted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Meli also feels that the Scotties had a positive impact on the region’s fan base. “So many people had their first opportunity to experience live championship curling and they definitely came away with a new appreciation for the sport. We’re seeing that now in early ticket sales… my advice to the fans is don’t wait too long because the best seats may be gone!”
