The Trip to the World’s Starts in Red Deer

Monday, 6 February 2012 - Posted by Graham Lloyd

The field is finally set for the 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.  Now we’re one step closer to answering the big question… who will wear the maple leaf in Lethbridge March 17-25 at the 2012 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship?

This year’s Scotties promises to be one of the most competitive ever, headed up by defending champion Amber Holland who returns to lead Team Canada.

Holland earned the title last year in Charlottetown – representing Saskatchewan – with a final end victory over Jennifer Jones.  And, a re-match may be in the making after Jones battled to a victory in the Manitoba playdowns for her ninth Scotties appearance including four championships.

Two-time Scotties winner Kelly Scott is back to represent British Columbia along with last year’s bronze medalist Heather Smith-Dacey from Nova Scotia, Marie-France Larouche from Quebec and Newfoundland & Labrador’s Heather Strong.

Alberta’s hopes are riding on Heather Nedohin, competing in her fifth Scotties… the first since 2000.  The team lost to Shannon Kleibrink in the 2011 provincial final but came back strong this year for a shot at the double-header right here at home.

The other teams qualifying for the trip to Red Deer are Kerry Galusha for the Northwest Territories/Yukon, Michelle Englot from Saskatchewan, Tracy Horgan from Ontario, Kim Dolan from Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick’s Rebecca Atkinson with Andrea Kelly throwing fourth stones.
