Harrison Fords to a Share of the Lead

Ontario rookie skip Nancy Harrison of the Burlington CC won twice on opening day at the 2012 Canadian Senior Women’s Curling Championship in Abbotsford, BC She followed up her impressive 5-2 decision in Draw 1 against Manitoba, with a workmanlike performance against Darla Esch of North Bay in the traditional Ontario versus Northern Ontario tilt. Harrison took two in the second end followed by a steal of one in the third. Despite a steal of one by Esch in the 7th and then a deuce in the 9th to tie the game, Harrison did  not have to throw her last stone when Esch’s attempt to get behind cover wrecked on the guard. The 8-5 victory has the Ontario skip with two wins. Joining her at 2-0 are two Cathys: Newfoundland & Labrador’s Cathy Cunningham and Alberta’s Cathy King. Cunningham continued her strong play with a decisive 12-5 win over Darlene Gillies of Unity CC in Saskatchewan. King’s Saville Sports Centre foursome  defeated a stubborn Ann McKellar-Gillis of the NWT 9-7. New Brunswick, Quebec and Nova Scotia evened their records at 1-1 with Draw 3 victories. Heidi Hanlon of New Brunswick used larceny in her 7-6 win over Manitoba’s Laurie Deprez. Hanlon was down two points without the hammer playing the 9th end where she stole two and then stole the winning point in the 10th end when Deprez’ last stone draw to the button was inches heavy Odette Trudel of Trois-Rivieres posted a pair of threes in the first two ends and coasted to an 9-5 win over PEI’s Shirley Berry; and, Nova Scotia’s Nancy Delahunt, with Colleen Jones tossing last stones, stopped BC’s Penny Shantz 10-6 in a well played game. Delahunt was one up coming home with the hammer and Jones calmly removed a BC counter in the four foot for the win. Dropping to 1-1 following opening draw victories are BC’s Shantz, Saskatchewan’s Gillies and Northern Ontario’s Esch. Winless teams after two games include Deprez’ Stonewall, MB foursome, PEI’s Berry and NWT’s McKellar Gillis.
