Smith takes fifth trip to Scotties for Nova Scotia

Heading in to the 2014 Nova Scotia’s women’s playdowns, Heather Smith had already worn the provincial colours four times at the Canadian women’s curling championship.

The 2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts will be hosted by Montreal for the first time in the 32-year history of the event, Feb. 1-9 at the Maurice Richard Arena. The Canadian women’s curling championship was contested in the city once before, in 1979, prior to taking on the Scotties title.

 
Big wins in the battle for playoff positions

After 13 draws at the 2013 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Manitoba (7-0), Ontario (6-1), Canada (6-2) and Saskatchewan (5-3) hold the top four spots in the round robin standings. But the rest of the field – including New Brunswick and PEI (both sitting at 4-4) and B.C. (4-3) – is working its way up from below, and Thursday afternoon’s games provided an opportunity to keep the leaders in sight.

Quebec rookies score big over Nova Scotia veterans

An experienced Nova Scotia team, featuring veterans Mary-Anne Arsenault, Kim Kelly and Colleen Jones – making her 21st appearance at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts –had their hands full in a 9-4 loss to rookie skip Allison Ross and her young team out of Quebec.
