News from the Wheelchair Championships

With an overall record of 10-1, Bruno Yizek’s rink has been the class of the field in this week’s Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championships. Three time finalists, but never champions, and with plenty of experience right through their lineup, Alberta will bring a wealth of poise and determination to this game.
By Rob Neff and Sarah Mendek…A Battle of the Titans! The afternoon 1 vs 2 Page Playoff featured Bruno Yizek’s Alberta foursome and Darwin Bender’s Team Saskatchewan. Alberta (8-1 round robin record) has been the class of the field all week. Saskatchewan (7-2) was almost as good. Both teams boast talent and experience and this matchup lived up to its billing.
(By Rob Neff and Sarah Mendek)…..Competition is really heating up at the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championships as page playoff action begins. The 3-4 game pitted Mark Ideson’s Team Ontario against Benoit Lessard’s Team Quebec, with the winner moving on to Sunday’s semi-final.
(By Rob Neff and Sarah Mendek)….Earlier today, Carl Levesque and his Northern Ontario team came through in a big way when it really counted. Facing a must win situation in the final draw, Northern Ontario shellacked Ontario 9-2, forcing a tiebreaker with Mark Ideson’s squad.
(By Rob Neff and Sarah Mendek)…… The round robin portion of the 2012 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship in Thunder Bay, ON at the Fort William Curling Club has concluded with five teams earning the right to move on to the playoffs.

The Northern Ontario host team (1-5), skipped by Richard Prud’homme and featuring a blend of curlers from Sudbury and Thunder Bay, was hoping to build on their fifth round win over Nova Scotia.

Unbeaten through four draws, veteran skip Bruno Yizek’s crew has been razor sharp. Three-time Canadian finalists, Alberta seems determined to shed the bridesmaid’s mantle this time around.
