How Points are Calculated (2012-2013)
How Points are Calculated (2012-2013)
Points awarded through the Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) are calculated based on a number of factors including the type of event, the size of the field, total cash purse, and more.
1. Cashspiels
Any cash event in the world will be sanctioned as a CTRS event based on meeting the following criteria:
- The event must have a minimum field of 15 teams for men and 12 teams for women;
- The total cash purse per gender divided by the number of teams entered must equal a minimum factor of 500; i.e. $7500 divided by 15 = 500;
- Double knockout, triple knockout & round robin pool formats are acceptable with the simple conditions that the Four Rock Free Guard Zone Rule must be used and games must be 8 or 10 ends in length;
All sanctioned cash events (except for the Canada Cup, Grand Slams and the Players’ Championships) will have a base CTRS point value determined by the number of Top 10 teams from the Order of Merit in the field.
A) CTRS Base Points for events with 0 or 1 team in the Order of Merit Top 10:
| 1st | 5.000 |
| 2nd | 3.500 |
| 3rd-4th | 2.500 |
| 5th–8th | 1.500 |
|
CTRS point may be issued for other teams not finishing in the final 8. |

Strength of Field Multiplier
This point value will then be subject to the Strength of Field Multiplier (SFM). The SFM will be assigned to each event based on the quality of the participating teams. The SFM will be calculated using the WCT’s Order of Merit (OOM) ranking on the Tuesday prior to the event.
Here is how it will calculated:
| MEN | |
| RANK | SFM |
| 1 | 0.45 |
| 2 | 0.44 |
| 3 | 0.43 |
| 4 | 0.42 |
| 5 | 0.41 |
| 6 | 0.40 |
| 7 | 0.39 |
| 8 | 0.38 |
| 9 | 0.37 |
| 10 | 0.36 |
| 11 | 0.35 |
| 12 | 0.34 |
| 13 | 0.33 |
| 14 | 0.32 |
| 15 | 0.31 |
| 16 | 0.30 |
| 17 | 0.29 |
| 18 | 0.28 |
| 19 | 0.27 |
| 20 | 0.26 |
| 21-30 | 0.25 |
| 31-50 | 0.20 |
| 51-80 | 0.15 |
| 81-115 | 0.10 |
| 116-150 | 0.05 |
| WOMEN | |
| RANK | SFM |
| 1 | 0.45 |
| 2 | 0.44 |
| 3 | 0.43 |
| 4 | 0.42 |
| 5 | 0.41 |
| 6 | 0.40 |
| 7 | 0.39 |
| 8 | 0.38 |
| 9 | 0.37 |
| 10 | 0.36 |
| 11 | 0.35 |
| 12 | 0.34 |
| 13 | 0.33 |
| 14 | 0.32 |
| 15 | 0.31 |
| 16 | 0.30 |
| 17 | 0.29 |
| 18 | 0.28 |
| 19 | 0.27 |
| 20 | 0.26 |
| 21-30 | 0.25 |
| 31-40 | 0.20 |
| 41-60 | 0.15 |
| 61-80 | 0.10 |
| 81-100 | 0.05 |
Example: A sanctioned Cash Event has 32 men’s teams competing for a purse of $50,000. In the field of 32 teams there are:
o three teams are ranked #1, #4 & #7 for an SFM value of 1.26 (.45 + .42 + .39)
o two teams are ranked #13 & #17 for an SFM value of .62 (.33 + .29)
o four teams are ranked #31-50 for an SFM value of .80 (4 x .20)
o six teams are ranked 116-150 for an SFM value of .30 (6 x .05)
o remaining teams are unranked.
Therefore, Adding all the values of the ranked teams establishes a total SFM of 2.98. We will then take that multiplier and use it against the base CTRS value:
| Final Placing | Base Value | SFM | Final CTRS |
| 1st | 6.000 | 2.98 | 17.880 |
| 2nd | 4.500 | 2.98 | 13.410 |
| 3rd–4th | 3.500 | 2.98 | 10.430 |
| 5th–8th | 2.500 | 2.98 | 7.450 |
| Others | 0.825 | 2.98 | 2.459 |
Each eligible event will begin with a base SFM value of 0.50. Two things happen here. If the cash event has a 0.50 SFM value or lower, the base CTRS values will be cut in half to 4.000; 2.500; 2.000; 1.500; and 0.500. If the event has an SFM of 0.51 or higher, the base CTRS values will be multiplied by the SFM factor to get the individual team CTRS point totals for the event. Finally, any cash event is also subject to a maximum SFM of 5.00, therefore the most CTRS points any team could earn would be 8.000 x 5.00 or 40.000 CTRS points.
Teams can only claim their best eight (8) results.
2. Fixed Point Total Events
(points are pre-determined and not impacted by the Strength of Field Multiplier with the exception of the provincial/territorial playdowns):
| Grand Slam Events (men and women) | |
| 1st | 40.000 points |
| 2nd | 27.000 points |
| 3rd-4th | 22.000 points |
| 5th-8th | 18.000 points |
| C final losers | 6.000 points (triple KOs only) |
| Teams not making the playoffs earn 3.000 CTRS points per round robin win. | |
| Canada Cup of Curling | |
| 1st | 45.000 points |
| 2nd | 30.000 points |
| 3rd | 25.000 points |
