James Tyre was born in Largs. Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1807 and came to Canada in 1825. For many years he was engaged in the dry goods business, first as a member of the firm of Scott, Tyre & C0. and subsequently as the principal of the house of Tyre, Colquhoun & Co. For a long period he was a keen curler and for nearly 40 years, a member of the Montreal club. He was one of the “Auld Callants” team consisting of Col. Dyde. Sir Hugh Allan, Hon. James Tyre of Montreal, Quebec was one of the first presidents of a provincial association. James was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974.
