Edmonton’s Wally Ursuliak won the 1961 Brier and world championship playing lead for Hector Gervais. His contribution to the growth of the sport in the 1960s and ’70s included operating curling-instruction clinics—along with Ray Turnbull and Don Duguid—across Canada and throughout parts of Europe. Ursuliak was also key to the development of curling in Japan’s north island of Hokkaido, where he played a lead role in an exchange program initiated by the government of Alberta.
