Sponge Girls Soak Up the Fun of Championship Curling

While the competition is always centre-stage at Season of Champions events, the fans often share the limelight with the best players in the game. And there’s none that stand out more than the infamous “Sponge Girls”.

If you were there for last year’s Canada Cup in Medicine Hat you would have seen them in the stands in their distinctive attire… or in the Patch hosting a popcorn sale to raise funds for the Sandra Schmirler Foundation.  They’ve also been known to raise a glass or two because “Sponge Girls just wanna have fun”! When the 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts comes to Red Deer, February 18 – 26 at Westerner Park, you can be sure the crew will be out in full force cheering in the stands and injecting life into the party.  Their motto is “go hard or go home” and these die-hard fans bring that spirit to the event every day. The Sponge Girls represent a collection of devoted curlers who have also served as volunteers for many championship events.   Getting together for the first time at the 2007 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Lethbridge, they’ve reunited in subsequent years to celebrate their love of the game at Season of Champions stops across the country. “Like a sponge we have soaked up every minute of the fun,” comments one of the founding members, Arlene Keck of Medicine Hat.  “Meeting the people and the curlers… enjoying the curling and, of course, the HeartStop Lounge!” “You Gotta Be There” with these fun-loving girls for the 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.  Just click here to get your tickets now.
