News release: Travelers Canada Hosts 2014 Travelers Curling Club Championship

Curling fever hits Halifax as the country’s top club teams descend on the Mayflower Curling Club

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Nov. 20, 2014 — Travelers Canada is proud to present the 2014 Travelers Curling Club Championship taking place at the Mayflower Curling Club from November 24 to 29. Teams from across Canada will compete for the ultimate title of Canadian Club Champions during six days of competition.

“We’re pleased to bring the Travelers Curling Club Championship to Halifax and raise money for local charities,” said Leigh Armstrong, elite Ontario curler and Chair of the 6th annual Travelers Curling Club Championship. “The Championship will feature great competition between the top clubs and we look forward to celebrating grassroots curling at its best.”

The event will officially begin with an opening reception and banquet for players on Sunday, Nov. 23 followed by Opening Ceremonies on Monday, Nov. 24 at 7:00 p.m. Teams representing every province and territory, plus a separate entry for Northern Ontario, will take part and crowds can expect highly-competitive play throughout the tournament.

Since its inception in 2009, the event has raised over $365,000 in support of various provincial chapters of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI, formerly the Canadian Paraplegic Association) and wheelchair curling. SCI works to assist those with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities achieve independence, self-reliance and full community participation. This year’s event will support SCI’s Nova Scotia chapter.

  • Opening Ceremonies, Monday, November 24, 7:00 pm at Mayflower Curling Club
    Opening rock thrown by World Champions Team Colleen Jones
  • Men’s and Women’s Finals, Saturday, November 29 at 9:00 am, Mayflower Curling Club
  • High Performance Curling Clinic, Friday, November 28, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at CFB Halifax Curling Club (on ice instruction and strategy session)
    Led by Jim Waite, four-time Canadian men’s Olympic curling coach, and other members of Canada’s curling elite
  • East Coast Night, a celebration of volunteers and sponsors and Semi Final Games, Friday, November 28, 7:00 pm, at Mayflower Curling Club (Shelagh Paul, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Travelers Canada, available for interviews)
  • Closing Ceremonies, Saturday, November 29, 11:00 am, at Mayflower Curling Club

A VIP Lounge will be available for media seating, upon request. Travelers Curling Club Championship Chair, Leigh Armstrong, as well as team members (French and English) are available for interviews and commentary.
