Newfoundland and Labrador’s Sharpe returns to Scotties – this time as skip

The Scotties Tournament of Hearts comes to Sydney, N.S.’s, Centre 200 this Feb. 16-24. Get to know the teams that will be competing for the Scotties crown this year.

Newfoundland and Labrador

Kelli Sharpe will head to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts for the seventh time (three of those representing Northwest Territories), and her first as a skip, as the long-time Heather Strong third managed to wrestle the Newfoundland and Labrador title from Re/Max Centre clubmate Cathlia Ward in a tight 5-4 final at Bally Haly Country Club in St. John’s.

Sharpe and teammates Stephanie Guzzwell, Beth Hamilton and Carrie Vautour used a deuce in the 10th end to eke out the victory over Ward, Jessica Cunningham, Cindy Miller and Noelle Thomas-Kennell.
Turpin, Guzzwell, Hamilton and Vautour all have previous experiences at the Scotties, but never together as a team.

The two Newfoundland and Labrador finalists advanced to the championship final of the six-team event after finishing with identical 4-1 records after the round-robin. Sharpe had defeated Ward 8-2 earlier in the event. In the final the two teams hooked up in a more defensive battle, blanking the first three ends.
