The Dawson Creek Curling Club is seeking a Head Ice Technician for the 2026–2027 curling season.
The Dawson Creek Curling Club is an 8-sheet seasonal facility located in Northeast British Columbia. The club hosts multiple weekly leagues, regional bonspiels, junior and elementary programs, rentals, and community events throughout the season. The facility also includes a lounge, banquet facility, food and beverage service, and pro shop.
LOCATION
Dawson Creek, British Columbia is located in Northeast BC at Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway and serves as a regional hub for the Peace Region.
The community offers a strong small-city atmosphere with access to outdoor recreation, regional amenities, and a lower cost of living than many larger urban centers in British Columbia.
Dawson Creek is approximately:
• 1.5 hours from Grande Prairie, Alberta
• 5 hours from Prince George, British Columbia
• 6 hours from Edmonton, Alberta
The city draws curlers and visitors from across Northeast BC and Northern Alberta throughout the curling season.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Head Ice Technician is responsible for the installation, preparation, and maintenance of curling ice surfaces to ensure safe, consistent, and professional playing conditions throughout the season.
The successful candidate will work closely with the General Manager, volunteers, and facility partners to maintain high-quality curling conditions and support club operations.
POSITION TERM
The position is seasonal in nature and generally runs:
• Mid-September – Ice installation and preparation
• October through March – Regular curling season operations
• April (typically to mid-April) – Ice removal and seasonal shutdown
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead seasonal ice installation and removal
• Prepare and maintain curling ice for leagues, bonspiels, rentals, and events
• Perform routine ice maintenance including scraping, pebbling, nipping, flooding, and repairs
• Monitor and record ice and facility conditions including temperatures and humidity
• Maintain curling stones and ice maintenance equipment
• Coordinate and supervise volunteer or assistant ice staff as required
• Maintain daily ice logs and operational records
• Assist in maintaining safe and professional ice conditions throughout the facility
FACILITY & OPERATIONAL STRUCTURE
• 8-sheet seasonal curling facility
• Approximately six annual bonspiels/events
• Detailed operational tracking and established maintenance procedures already in place
• Volunteer support available during installation and major events
• City-operated refrigeration plant infrastructure in coordination with arena staff
QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience in curling ice making, arena operations, refrigeration systems, or facility maintenance required
• Curling ice technician certification considered a strong asset
• Ability to work independently and manage seasonal workloads
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability considered an asset
• Physical ability to perform manual labor related to ice preparation and maintenance
COMPENSATION
Seasonal compensation anticipated in the range of:
$30,000 – $45,000 per season
Based on an estimated seasonal workload of:
900 – 1,000 hours
Equivalent to approximately:
$30 – $47 per hour
Final compensation will be determined based on experience, training requirements, and the final structure of the role.
POSITION STRUCTURE
The club is open to discussing different operational structures including:
• Independent contractor agreement
• Seasonal hourly employment
• Shared responsibilities with assistant/support staff
• Split installation and seasonal maintenance roles
