Nanaimo Curling Centre is an 8-sheet facility in the heart of Nanaimo. There is regular league curling Sunday through Friday, along with ice rentals, bonspiels, and other events. The facility is available for use year-round, with rentable space for meetings, events, and various celebrations. The Nanaimo Curling Centre provides a welcoming, accessible environment for people of all ages and abilities to build friendships, sportsmanship, and skill development through the sport of curling. The Centre operates as a year-round facility responsive to the needs of the community.
About the role:
• Responsibility to follow all written policies and procedures for the safe operation of the plant in accordance with TSBC and Worksafe regulations
• Responsible for the instillation, maintenance, and removal of curling ice
• Setup, meet, and maintain a working relationship with the contracted refrigeration company
• Plan and organize both the plant start-up and shutdown each season
• Work with all staff, volunteers, and volunteers as required
• Daily maintenance of all curling sheets, preparing the ice for each draw in a timely manner
• Maintenance and safe operation of all ice maintenance equipment including but not limited to ice scraper, nipper, pebbling equipment, etc.
• Ensure that the building and surrounding grounds are kept clean and in a neat manner
• Complete all daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning routines as directed by the General Manager
• Report any/all equipment failures, staff concerns, and ice issues to the General Manager in a timely manner
• Ensure that the grounds, entrances and fire exits, and parking are clear and free of litter, snow, and all obstructions
• Ensure plant room, rock room, and various curling areas are kept clean, tidy, and organized
• Assist in hiring, training, and supervising ice and building staff
• Point of contact for plant alarms
• Regular ice plant checks
• Perform regular cleaning activities and cleaning schedules along with Assistance Ice Technicians as directed by the General Manager including but not limited to vacuuming carpets, stairs, sweeping and mopping all floors and washrooms, regular washroom checks and restocking of all supplies
• Setup, tear down, and clean up for all special and regular building events
• Assist with ice operational budget
• Oversee all relevant outside contractor work
• Work with the General Manager and staff in regard to ice and event schedules
• All other duties as assigned by the General Manager
Candidate Requirements:
• Previous experience as a Head Ice Technician at a curling facility
• Curling Club Ice Technician (previous Level 2) or Level 3 Ice Technician certification
• RO or Class 4 Power Engineer Certificate preferred
• Minimum of RSA Certificate required (must be willing to get if you do not already posses it)
• First Aid/AED Certificate
• Completion of yearly WHMIS training
• Good communication skills both written and spoken
• Ability to manage time effectively
• Ability to work both independently and as a member of the team
• Ability to work flexible hours, evenings, weekends, holidays, etc.
