Biography / Biographie:

The women’s world championship was born in Perth, Scotland, in 1979, and it was just a year later that a Canadian team won the event. In 1980, Saskatchewan’s Marj Mitchell—with third Nancy Kerr, second Shirley McKendry and lead Wendy Leach—was victorious with a record of 9-1.

Mitchell was a winner in every sense of the word—feisty, strong-willed, determined and confident. Unfortunately, there was one battle Mitchell couldn’t win. In 1983, shortly after the second Scott Tournament of Hearts, she died of cancer at the age of 35.
