Battle of the Atlantic
With only the Northumberland Strait dividing them geographically, the Atlantic provinces of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island share a rivalry on the frozen water that was renewed in today’s morning draw at the Canadian Senior Men’s Curling Championships in Abbotsford, BC presented by Raymond James.
Both provinces dropped their first game of the 11 game round robin. As a result, this was a critical early round matchup for them both. Ends were played close to the vest until the 7th when the quartet from the Riverside Country Club in Rothsey, NB skipped by Mark Armstrong placed a crooked number on the scoreboard, a five! The final score for the archives was 8-4 in nine ends balancing New Brunswick’s record at 1-1 and leaving the east coast islanders under the leadership of skip Charlie Wilkinson looking for their first win.
While the Battle of the Atlantic was taking place on sheet D at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre, a family feud erupted on sheet F where Northern Ontario skipped by Ontario Supreme Court Judge, Rob Gordon, tangled with their southern counterparts from the nation’s capital out of the Ottawa C. C. under the direction of Brian Lewis. When the dust had cleared after tens ends, the score was knotted at five with Ontario having that precious last stone advantage in the extra stanza. Facing two Northern Ontario stones in front and behind the button behind a tight guard, skip Lewis had no choice but to draw to the lid to earn the 6-5 win.
Another contest between Alberta and Quebec was hard-fought most of the way until the Red Deer quad broke the game open with a four spot in the 8th moving the prairie foursome to an unblemished 2-0 record. The team from la belle province out of the Buckingham C.C. left the ice still searching for that first “w”.
Last season’s men’s national senior championship team from Manitoba skipped by the friendly dairy farmer, Kelly Roberston, scored early and consistently to record a 7-5 win over the team from Whitehorse, YK skipped by George Hilderman.
The home province four out of the Prince George C. C. skipped by veteran Dennis Grabber, put together a 10-7 victory on the strength of four points stolen in end five over the Bluenose crew from the Mayflower C. C. in Halifax with Dave McCusker at the helm.
Play resumes in the afternoon with three women’s and three men’s games.
