Cheers erupted from the bleachers next to the ice at the Assiniboia Curling Club in Saskatchewan.
While the home province team was on the ice Tuesday afternoon at the 2025 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, the loudest cheers weren’t for the locals. Instead, they were for the game on the far sheet, reserved for the New Brunswick Team from Fredericton’s Capital Winter Club.
Team Rene Comeau gave fans plenty to cheer about, earning a come-from-behind win and staying undefeated at 4-0.
Two-thirds of the way through initial pool play at the Canadian mixed, skip Rene Comeau, vice-skip Jennifer Fenwick, second Alex Robichaud, and lead Katie Vandenborre are improving with each game. The quartet overcame its toughest challenge yet. They achieved a 4-3 win over Manitoba’s Team Sean Grassie (2-2; Winnipeg).
“We blanked seven, so we were happy coming home in eight with hammer. We just had to get our deuce. I had to make two great shots at the end, but my sweepers guided it in there for me and we’re happy to come out with this win,” Comeau said.
Those shots were impressive. Comeau threw two draws to the four-foot, guided by the sweepers, for the game-winning deuce.

The cheers came from Fenwick’s Regina-based co-workers, who surprised the New Brunswick team with a Tuesday field trip and witnessed a “barn burner.”
It has been a memorable week for the teammates, who are friends first. By Tuesday’s end, New Brunswick was the only undefeated team in Pool B, and having one game in hand on the next best in the field, British Columbia’s Team Miles Craig (4-1; Victoria).
“I’ve known the girls forever, and Alex and I play together in men’s, so it’s so much fun coming here to the nationals and to be with your friends. To be winning makes it even more fun,” Comeau said.
“I think team dynamics are so important, right? So trust in each other. I know these guys are just phenomenal athletes, phenomenal curlers. So we just have full trust and confidence in each other, and I think that’s what’s important.”
New Brunswick faces two key games on Wednesday to finish round-robin play. The top four teams advance to the Championship Pool on Thursday. Opponents include British Columbia’s Team Craig and Alberta’s Team Jessie Hunkin (1-3; Edmonton).
“We came into this event knowing we have what it takes. So it’s nice to come out with the wins, especially going into the championship pool, your record really matters. It’s nice to get these wins early, but there are still many tough games to come,” Comeau said.
Pool A has a similar look, with one team undefeated and holding a one-game lead. Ontario’s Team Sam Mooibroek (4-0; Whitby) is in first, followed by the home province team Saskatchewan led by skip Jason Ackerman (4-1; Regina).
Action from the 2025 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship will continue Wednesday with draws at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m., (all times Central).
