Two young Canadian teams have arrived in Denmark — the payoff for a championship they won nearly a year ago.
Alberta’s Myla Plett and Nova Scotia’s Calan MacIsaac will skip the two Canadian entries in the 2026 World Junior Curling Championships beginning Tuesday in Taarnby, Denmark, just outside Copenhagen.
The two squads earned their Maple Leaf jackets by winning the 2025 New Holland U-20 Canadian Championships in Summerside, P.E.I.
“We have more experience and know what to expect at the event,” said Plett, who along with vice-skip Alyssa Nedohin, second Chloe Fediuk, and lead Allie Iskiw, alternate Abby Whitbread and coaches David Nedohin and Blair Lenton represented Canada at the 2024 World Championship as well. “This time, we’ve gotten to have train a bit longer and have more knowledge going into it than we did last time.”
The men’s entry, skipped by MacIsaac, plays out of Truro, N.S., and is rounded out by third Nathan Gray, second Owain Fisher, vice-skip/lead Chris McCurdy, alternate Nicholas Mosher and coach Craig Burgess.
“We know coming into this event all the teams will be very good and we will have to be on top of our game every game,” said MacIsaac. “We think it’s going to be a great event. We’re hoping to get on some good ice and see what we can do.”
With a whole year to plan, the teams have been able to properly prepare for the event in Europe.
“We had a training camp with everybody and all the coaches,” said MacIsaac. “We all feel really good about how we are throwing.”
“We know how much energy each one of us has put into this process so we can have confidence going into the event that we will play at our best,” said Plett. “Additionally, if you know our team, our love of trying new coffee is unmatched to any other team. Finding a favourite coffee shop is always a must during big events like this.”
“What I’m looking forward to most is making some really good memories with these guys,” said MacIsaac. “This is our first and last World Juniors and I want to make the most of it with this group.”
As a send-off, the Truro Curling Club threw a party last week. “We had a great turnout. We have lots of people behind us cheering us on. We are very thankful for our club. The amount of support we get from them is unbelievable.”
“For now it’s been mostly practice and watching the Olympics as a team,” said Plett of their last minute preparations. “We actually recently went to a bungee workout where we did a workout on bungee cords which was a super fun experience.”
Team Leaders Beth Iskiw and Daryell Nowlan round out the Canadian contingent. Competition begins Tuesday and concludes on March 3. The teams will play a nine-game round robin schedule, with the top four (of 10) advancing to the playoffs.
Games at the 2026 World Junior Curling Championships will be streamed live on The Curling Channel.
