Inside the NTP: National Wheelchair Curling Program

In April, about a month after the Olympic/Paralympic Games, Olympic and Paralympic athletes and coaches were invited to Ottawa to be recognized for their successes in Parliament and to celebrate with each other in Montreal at a parade and Gala! It was a terrific end to a great year in curling!

Our sport is in motion 12 months of the year…and over the summer the national program has developed a plan of action for the 2010-11 season.

As we plan and prepare for the next quadrennial, the CCA looks forward to furthering our Long Term Athlete Development mandate within our wheelchair program.

The Discover Curling Program will continue to serve grassroots development.

The National Coaching Staff will continue to develop National Program athletes and will select a team to represent Canada at the World Wheelchair Curling Championships in 2011.

Commencing in October 2010 we propose to conduct regional Talent ID/Development Camps with the intention to recruit talented/promising wheelchair athletes to the National Team Program while making a positive contribution to local wheelchair curling programs. The camps will be coordinated by Wendy Morgan and conducted by National Wheelchair Coaching Staff and National Program Athletes.

As we progress through the quadrennial, individual wheelchair curlers with demonstrated high performance skills and attributes will be provided with the opportunity to train with the National Team Program, and in turn, potential selection to the National Team by meeting the following criteria:

  • Current National Team carded athletes
  • Winners of the 2011 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championships
  • Individual Performance at the 2011 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championships
  • Provincial/Territorial Recommendations
  • Individually achieving National Team Performance Standards (available upon request)
  • Observed performances at 2010-11 regional camps

We would like to acknowledge the continued support of Own The Podium as we move forward to the next phase of our sport development.
