Smith takes fifth trip to Scotties for Nova Scotia

Heading in to the 2014 Nova Scotia’s women’s playdowns, Heather Smith had already worn the provincial colours four times at the Canadian women’s curling championship. After posting an unblemished record, Jan. 7-12 at the Sydney Curling Club, Smith earned the right to represent the province once again at the 2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Feb. 1-9 in the Maurice Richard Arena in Montreal.

Five of the eight teams in the field played out of the Mayflower Curling Club, including Smith and defending champion Mary-Anne Arsenault. Dartmouth’s Kelly MacIntosh put the dampers on an all-Mayflower showdown with an extra-end victory over Arsenault in the semifinal match. In the championship final, Smith picked up three in the last end to win by a 6-3 count. Smith’s best showing at the Scotties came in 2011 when she defeated Rachel Homan in the bronze medal game. At the 2013 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials, she was the alternate for the Homan team that will compete in Montreal as Team Canada. Smith will be joined in the Maurice Richard Arena by third Jill Brothers, second Blisse Joyce and lead Teri Lake. “You Gotta Be There” for all the excitement of live championship curling, when the Scotties Tournament of Hearts comes to Montreal.
