Jeff Stoughton earned a record tenth Manitoba title with a victory over Sean Grassie in the final of the men’s provincial curling playdowns, Feb. 10 in Neepawa.
The Stoughton team, playing out of the Charleswood Curling Club in Winnipeg, moves on to the 2013 Tim Hortons Brier, March 2-10 in Edmonton’s Rexall Place. It marks the fourth time in the past five years he has worn the Manitoba bison crest at the Canadian Men’s Curling Championship.
After a loss to Grassie, 2009 Canadian mixed curling champ, in the 1 vs 2 Page playoff, Stoughton bounced back to defeat Mike McEwen and advance to the final.
Stoughton – a three-time Brier champion – will be backed by a squad that has considerable experience on the national stage. It will be Jon Mead’s fifth Brier, the third for Reid Carruthers and ninth for lead Mark Nichols, new to the team this year after previously throwing third stones for Brad Gushue of Newfoundland/Labrador.
