After a record-setting seven consecutive years skipping teams at the Canadian Junior Women’s Curling Championship, Sarah Koltun of the Whitehorse Curling Club, in the Yukon Territory, will be moving up the competitive ranks for the 2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
The 20-year-old defeated veteran Kerry Galusha in the final of the Northwest/Yukon Territories playdowns, held Jan. 3-6 at the Yellowknife Curling Club. The two teams finished the round robin with matching 5-1 records, but the Koltun foursome prevailed in the championship showdown by a 6-4 score.
Galusha has represented the Territories at the Canadian women’s curling championship 11 times since 1998, including eight of the past nine years.
Koltun will lead teammates Chelsea Duncan, Patty Wallingham and Andrea Sinclair in the 2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Feb. 1-9 at Montreal’s Maurice-Richard Arena.
Nearly the same lineup — Wallingham will play third, Duncan’s younger sister Jenna will be at second and Sinclair will remain at lead — will also open play Jan. 18 at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors in Liverpool, N.S.
