Canada’s Peterman and Gallant fall to Scotland in World Mixed Doubles round-robin finale

Disappointing? Absolutely. End of the world? Not even remotely. That’s how Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant summed up a Thursday afternoon loss to finish round-robin play at the 2025 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship.

The Chestermere, Alta., duo fell 8-7 in an extra end to Scotland’s Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat, who stole the winning point on an extra-end measurement.

The result meant both teams completed the round robin with 7-2 records behind the unbeaten Italian pairing of Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner (9-0).

All three teams are headed to the playoffs, with Italy seeded first from Group A, followed by Scotland and Canada.

“A new tournament starts tomorrow,” said Gallant. “Just bring ’er for the playoffs.”

Canada’s playoff opponent will be the second-place team from Group B, which won’t be sorted until later Thursday, with seven of the 10 teams in the pool still mathematically alive for a playoff spot.

The first-place teams in each group receive a bye to the semifinals, which are scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. (all times Eastern). The second- and third-place teams cross over for qualification games Friday at 9 a.m, from which the winners advance to the semifinals. The winners of those games go to the gold-medal game Saturday at 1 p.m., and the losing teams compete in the bronze-medal game Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

Peterman and Gallant, supported by team coach Laine Peters and national coach Scott Pfeifer, took their first lead against Scotland when Peterman made a precise draw for two in the fourth end to put Canada up 3-2.

An end later, Canada stole a deuce to go up 5-2. The teams then swapped deuces to give Canada a 7-4 lead heading into the eighth end.

But Dodds made up for her fifth-end last-shot miss with a wonderful raise takeout to score three and force an extra end.

Peterman had a shot to bite a big piece of the button for the victory but was millimetres off target.

While the loss didn’t have an discernible effect on Canada’s playoff status or its Olympic qualifying hopes, it was hard to swallow in the immediate aftermath of the game, albeit with the knowledge that the team finds itself just three wins away from Canada’s first World Mixed Doubles Championship gold medal.

“We wanted to win that either way,” said Peterman. “We always have that mindset that we want to win every game. But we did accomplish our goal of making the playoffs and now, it’s on to the next one.”

Both players have no shortage of playoff experience; in addition to winning two Canadian mixed doubles titles together as well as the Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials earlier this season, they’ve also experienced an abundance of success in four-player national events — most recently, Gallant’s contributions to Team Brad Jacobs winning the Montana’s Brier in Kelowna, B.C.

“The key of the playoffs is you don’t have to do anything extra,” said Gallant. “You just have to play your own game, play the way you’ve been playing during the week, stay loose and support each other; stay positive.”

“That’s kind of the keys and it’s always the keys to our game, so we just have to keep doing that tomorrow.”
