Competition Ice Technician

The term “Competition Ice” is used to describe curling ice installed in an arena (a non-dedicated curling facility, such as a hockey rink) over an existing ice surface for a short-duration competitive event.

Program Delivered by:Curling Canada

Prerequisites required to apply:

Space may be limited;
*selection based on experience may be required.

One of the following two options:

  1. “Certified” Curling Ice Technician Program OR;
  2. “Certified” Level 2 (previous levels system) with Safe Sport Education Module 

AND

  • 3+ years experience working as a Certified Curling Ice Technician
  • Resume
  • Letter of Interest outlining career aspirations
Program Length:Three-day in-person training. Training will take place during an installation in an arena.

Who should attend:Certified Curling Ice Technicians who wish to gain more knowledge for their personal professional development. Certified Curling Ice Technicians who want to get involved in competitive events being held in their province/territory.
Learning outcomes:

Participants of the Competition Ice Technician workshop can expect to learn about:

o Water filtration and flooding ice level
o Advanced Pebbling techniques, theory (e.g., size, temperature, and speed)
o Advanced Scraping techniques, reading the blade, honing, truing the blade
o Advanced Clipping with a Scraper, controlling speed and curl with the clip
o Dragging rocks to break them in after texturing and to break the sheet in before game play
o Building the sheet for Competition ice
o Preparing ice for Local Tour Events, Mixed Doubles, Youth Events, and Wheelchair
o Monitoring and controlling environmental conditions (e.g. Refrigeration, air, humidity)
o Stone maintenance, advanced texturing techniques, maintaining the running surface width
o Troubleshooting
o Takedown
o Scheduling & Volunteer Management
o Professionalism and advanced customer service (e.g. With Staff, Management, Public, Ice Technicians)
