The showdown to decide Newfoundland/Labrador’s representatives for the 2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts – the Canadian women’s curling championship – came to a close, Jan. 11 in St. John’s.
The five-team field in the provincial playdowns, contested at the city’s RE/MAX Centre, included three names that have been dominant on Newfoundland/Labrador women’s curling scene for more than a decade – Heather Strong, Shelley Nichols and Stacie Devereaux.
After finishing round robin play with 3-1 records, Strong downed former teammate Nichols in the championship match. The victory earned Strong an 11th trip to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Feb. 1-9, in Montreal’s Maurice-Richard Arena.
Team Newfoundland/Labrador includes the skip’s sister, Laura Strong at third, and Jessica Cunningham and Kathryn Cooper on the front end.
Nichols has competed twice in the Scotties, throwing third stones for Strong, and at the skip position in 2010. Devereaux is a four-time representative for the province at the M&M Canadian Juniors, silver-medallist at the 2007 world women’s junior’s and a two-time competitor at the Scotties.
