Sweeting prepares for another major championship
Val Sweeting is getting accustomed to the pressure of championship curling this season. In her latest foray into the heat of competition, the Edmonton skip came out on top in the Alberta provincial playdowns to qualify for the 2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Feb. 1-9 in Montreal.

Sweeting, playing out of Edmonton’s Saville Sports Centre, defeated former Olympic silver-medallist Cheryl Bernard in the championship game at the Sylvan Lake Multiplex. Bernard downed 2012 Scotties champ Heather Nedohin in the semifinal.
It will be the second trip to the Scotties for Sweeting: in 2010 she became the youngest skip to ever represent Alberta at the Canadian women’s curling championship.
The Sweeting team, including Dana Ferguson, Joanne Courtney and Rachelle Pidherny, competed in the 2013 Capital One Roar to the Roar Pre-Trials event in Kitchener, Ont., securing one of the final two women’s spots in the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings.
After getting off to a strong start at the Canadian Curling Trials, Sweeting finished one win short of the playoffs with a 3-4 record.
