Two streaks collide!

Canada and Switzerland to clash at the BKT Tires World Women’s Curling Championship

It has all the hallmarks of an epic clash of the titans. Tonight’s evening draw at the 2024 BKT Tires World Women’s Curling Championship will feature a meeting of the two remaining unbeaten teams, a battle for the top spot in the standings and a meeting of two teams riding impressive winning streaks.

Reigning four-time world champion Silvana Tirinzoni guided Switzerland (6-0) to its sixth straight win at the event on Tuesday afternoon, with a 6-3 victory over Norway’s Team Marianne Roervik (2-4) to set up tonight’s clash with Canada’s Team Rachel Homan (5-0).

Switzerland goes into the match riding a 42-game winning streak at the world championships, while Canada’s Team Homan is on a 21-game winning streak this season through the Grand Slam, the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and five games at the worlds.

Canada had the afternoon bye after handing Italy’s Team Stefania Contantini (5-1) its first loss of the tournament in the morning draw.

Italy bounced back this afternoon, scoring three in the second end and four in the fourth to roll past New Zealand’s Team Jessica Smith (1-5) by a score of 11-3. In the other two games, Japan’s Team Miyu Ueno (2-4) beat Estonia’s Team Liisa Turmann (1-5) by a score of 10-4, while Denmark’s Team Madeleine Dupont (5-1) stole two in the eighth end to subdue the United States and Team Tabitha Peterson (2-4) by a score of 7-4.

The top six teams in the 13-country championship advance to the playoff round. Ties for the playoffs will be solved by head-to-head results.

The top two teams from round-robin play get byes to Saturday’s semifinals. The third-place team will play the sixth and fourth will play fifth in the qualifying-round games that morning.

The winners of the qualifying-round games advance to the semifinals. The semifinal losers will play for the bronze medal Sunday morning. The winners meet for the gold Sunday evening.

The 2024 BKT Tires World Women’s Curling Championship continues Tuesday with the evening draw at 7 p.m. Atlantic.
