Curling History is Made at The Dominion Curling Club Championship

TORONTO, November 30, 2009 – The Dominion Curling Club Championship – Canada’s first-ever national championship for club curlers – made curling history yesterday, declaring men’s and women’s Canadian Champions after a thrilling week of competition between the best club teams from each of the country’s provinces and territories. The Dominion Curling Club Championship Men’s Team Ontario from the Chatham Granite Club took home the national title for their province, after a hard-fought battle with their fellow finalists from British Columbia. The women’s Team Ontario – this one from Toronto’s High Park Curling Club – emerged victorious over their opponents from Manitoba. The two champions were presented with commemorative plaques amidst closing ceremonies that featured all 112 competing curlers – including Nunavut teams for the first time in an adult national competition – piped in formation onto the ice, dressed in their provincial and territorial colours and bearing their respective flags. During its November 24-29 run at St. George’s Golf and Country Club, the inaugural The Dominion Curling Club Championship welcomed a guest list that included world champion Canadian curler and Olympic hopeful Glenn Howard, 1998 Olympic Silver Medalist Mike Harris, multi-time provincial curling champion Sherry Middaugh, and Toronto Mayor David Miller. “Sunday’s finals and closing ceremonies brought an exciting and very moving conclusion to what has been an important week for curling and Canadian amateur sport,” said George Cooke, President and CEO of The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company (The Dominion). “Feedback from our participants and the curling community at large has been simply outstanding, and we eagerly anticipate next year’s event in Prince Edward Island.” All profits from The Dominion Curling Club Championship are being directed to the Canadian Paraplegic Association and developmental curling initiatives in communities across the country.
