Reid surprises in Quebec
Serge Reid and his Kénogami Curling Club team of François Gionest, Simon Collin and Steeve Villeneuve surprised many with an 8-7 extra end win over former provincial champion Martin Ferland Sunday at the Quebec men’s provincial championship.
Reid had finished atop Section A with an 8-1 mark, followed by Simon Dupuis and defending provincial champion Jean-Michel Ménard, both at 7-2.
Meanwhile, Ferland of St-Romuald went undefeated during the round robin, claiming first place in Section B with a 9-0 mark, followed by Ted Butler at 7-2 and Pierre Charette at 6-3.
In the A1 vs B1 game, Reid clipped Ferland, 5-3 to advance to the final. Meanwhile, Ménard first eliminated Butler, 9-4, then took out Charette 11-5 to advance to the semi-final against Ferland. Ferland prevailed though, 8-3, to set up the rematch with Jonquière’s Reid.
It will be the Brier debut for Reid, Gionest, Collin and Villeneuve, as they seek a third Brier win for Quebec since 1927, following victories by Jim Ursel in 1977 in Montreal and by Ménard in 2006 in Regina.
