Young, Sears claim mixed doubles tourney title

FORT McMURRAY, Alta. — The pairing of Mitch Young from the Yukon and Sarah Sears from Nova Scotia captured the inaugural M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Mens and Women’s Curling Championships mixed doubles title on Sunday.

The mixed doubles competition was open to all players not participating in the playoffs at the Canadian Juniors. Young and Sears, whose team was coached by Gary Ryan of Newfoundland/Labrador, defeated New Brunswick’s Rene Comeau and Northern Ontario’s Megan Westlund (with coach Todd Troyer of B.C.) 5-2 in the final on Sunday. In the bronze-medal game, Quebec’s Marc-Alexandre Charest-Dion combined with P.E.I.’s Sabrina Smith (coach Wade Scoffin of the Yukon) to beat Ontario’s David Easter and P.E.I.’s Veronica Smith (Sabrina’s sister), along with coach Nick Saturnino of the Northwest Territories, 7-4.
