Three teams unbeaten after two days at BKT Tires World Women’s Championship

It’s been so long since Silvania Tirinzoni lost a game at the BKT Tires World Women’s Curling Championship she may not ever remember what it’s like to lose.

The four-time defending champions from Switzerland ran their impressive win streak to 39 games Sunday night at Sydney’s Centre 200 with a six-end, 9-3 win over Liisa Turmann and Team Estonia.

Backed by third Alina Paetz, second Selina Witschonke, lead Carole Howald, alternate Stefanie Berset, Tirinzoni and coach Pierre Charette, scored five in the first end and never looked back.

Only two days into the BKT Tires world championship and three of the early favourites, Canada, Switzerland and Italy, are sitting confidently atop the standings at 3-0.

Stefania Constantini and Team Italy stole deuces in the seventh and eighth ends for an 8-2 win over Team Rebecca Morrison of Scotland (1-2)  to keep pace with the front-runners.

Team Canada, skipped by Rachel Homan of Ottawa, improved to 3-0 with a 10-6 win over the United States in the afternoon draw.

Tabitha Peterson and the United States (2-2) bounced back from two straight losses to score a 7-5 win over Marianne Roervik of Norway (1-2) while Team Madeleine Dupont of Denmark (2-1) edged Team Miyu Ueno of Japan (1-2) 6-5.

Team Canada takes on Norway on Monday afternoon in its lone game of the day.

Other Sunday evening teams with the bye included South Korea (2-1), New Zealand (1-2), Turkey (1-2) and Sweden (0-3).

The top two teams in the standings advance directly to the semifinals. The third- through sixth-ranked teams compete in playoff qualification games (3 vs. 6; 4 vs. 5) with the winners advancing to the semifinals. The semifinal winners play in the gold-medal game and the losers play for bronze. The final goes March 24.

The 2024 BKT Tires World Women’s Curling Championship continues Monday with draws at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. (all times Atlantic).
