Medicine Hat Curling Centre, Alberta

Reports to: Personnel Committee and Board  

Position Summary: 

To manage all aspects of the Medicine Hat Curling Centre (MHCC) operations, including implementation and adherence of Board policies and procedures. To represent the MHCC at local events as required/requested.  

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT  

Monday – Friday. (Additional hours may be required during events). 

8 hours per day / 40 hours per week.  

Full-time, Contract (3 year), with option for renewal pending review after contract expiration.  

Start date: Summer 2024. Possibility of part time work starting in Spring 2024.  

Salary: To be negotiated. 

6-month probationary period, followed by employee evaluation 

EDUCATION 

  • High School diploma.  
  • Post secondary education in Business Administration, or related field is considered an asset.  

EXPERIENCE 

  • Minimum 2-3 year experience in a management/supervisory role. 
  • Experience, knowledge, or interest in the sport of curling is considered an asset. 
  • Experience in Marketing is considered an asset. 

SKILLS 

  • Excellent customer service skills with an ability to establish positive working relationships with fellow centre members, staff, guests, and community stakeholders. 
  • Leadership skills while displaying maturity, responsibility, and reliability in representing the MHCC. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong time-management skills and an ability to coordinate multiple-tasks at once. 
  • Self-motivated and works well with minimal direction. 
  • Ability to work with computers and operational programs/platforms (i.e. social media). 
  • Strong knowledge in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 
  • Knowledge in bookkeeping and accounting. 
  • Ability to balance, maintain, and communicate financial records.  
  • Experience with grant writing is considered an asset.  
  • First Aid certification is required or can be obtained during probation period. 
  • ProServe Certification (Liquor staff training) is considered an asset. 
  • Ability to work well with others and take direction. 
  • The ability to coach and provide curling instruction would be an asset.  

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. To ensure the head ice technician is managing and maintaining the physical plant and ice area to ensure it is in accordance with structural and aesthetic standards, including: 
  1. Ensuring adherence to approved preventive maintenance program. 
  1. Dealing, on a proactive basis, to issues as they arise. 
  1. Coordinating activities of the head ice technician and staff to ensure development and maintenance of quality curling ice. 
  1. Ensuring rocks are maintained to an acceptable standard. 
  1. In co-ordination with the Ice Tech staff maintaining, daily, the physical appearance of the interior and exterior of the building. 
  1. Manage relations between kitchen lessee and Curling Centre (lessor) 
  1. Ensure agreed upon operation hours are being met. 
  1. Assist with the planning of catering for events including but not limited to curling bonspiels, private rentals, and fundraising events.  
  1. Ensure kitchen space complies with health code standards and other legal requirements. 
  1. Ensure kitchen space complies with building code regulations and other legal requirements.  
  1. Managing operations of the lounge, including: 
  1. Monitoring compliance with health standards and other legal requirements. 
  1. Implementing board decisions. 
  1. Supervision of lounge staff. 
  1. Financial management and reporting control, including: 
  1. Preparation of required monthly reports for the Finance Committee. 
  1. Processing of accounts payable and accounts receivable in a proper and timely manner. 
  1. Process and pay various kinds of bills and invoices. 
  1. Monitor adherence to budgets, as approved by the Board. 
  1. Supervise bookkeeping and accounting staff. Implementing Board (or committee) decisions. 
  1. Monitor in adherence to budgets, as approved by the Board of directors and General Manager.  
  1. Inventory management for pro-shop, and restocking equipment as needed. 
  1. Assisting with purchase and ordering of curling equipment for customers/members.  
  1. Assistance with booking and facilitating leagues and/or interested parties with social functions and banquets. 
  1. Preparation of monthly reports for the finance committee and the Board of Directors. 
  1. Processing of accounts payable and account receivables in a proper and timely manner. 
  1. Manage bi-monthly staff payroll and government deductions. 
  1. Monitor in adherence with Government of Canada taxation (GST, etc.). 
  1. Monitor in adherence with Government of Alberta (Workers Compensation, etc.). 
  1. Maintaining personnel files (Application of Employment, Payroll Statements, etc.). 
  1. General secretarial duties (drafting of letters, proposals, grant applications, etc.). 
  1. Assist with purchase, and clerical work relating to memberships. 
  1. Maintain up to date Membership and Shareholders list. 
  1. Ensure occupational and health guidelines are met. 
  1. Ensure all human resource protocols and procedures are appropriately and adequately followed. Ensure all employees receive a copy of and are familiar with employment policies as adopted by the Board. Ensure performance reviews are given for all full-time employees. Ensure job descriptions are created and communicated for all personnel. 
  1. Coordinate and assist with various events hosted at MHCC, including but not limited to: 
  1. Local curling leagues. 
  1. Curling bonspiels. 
  1. Fundraising events. 
  1. Private rentals.

  1. Accountable for the proper functioning of the lounge. 
  1. Accountable for implementation and monitoring adherence to all Board policies. 
  1. Accountable for maintenance of the facility.  

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT 

Supervision of both part time and full-time staff, including: 

  • Ice Staff 
  • Lounge Staff 
  • Office Staff 

ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS 

  • Ability to work flexible hours depending on the task at hand, including evenings and weekends, and establishing regular office hours as the General Manager.  
  • Be able and willing to attend various community events including but not limited to: 
  • Chamber of Commerce events. 
  • School award functions. 
  • Functions involving promotion and growth of local sports and recreation. 
  • Investigate and maintain year-round rentals. 
  • Be main contact person with both Curling Alberta and Curling Canada   
  • Help with hiring and onboarding MHCC staff. 
  • Assist Board with the growth and development in Medicine Hat and surrounding area.
